Situated on the bank of the Euphrates River in south-central Iraq, Shuruppak was one of the city states of Sumer. Excavations in 1902-03 by the Deutsche Orient Gesellschaft and in 1931 by The University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania uncovered important remains of the Early Dynastic Period (classical Sumerian Period dating from 2900 to 2350 BC).
