A city on the West shore of the Sea of Galilee near hot springs. It was built by Herod Antipas - Tetrarch of Galilee - about AD 18 and named in honor of the Emperor Tiberius. The city was built like a Hellenistic or Roman city with its streets crossing at right angles. Herod adorned it with many public buildings including a stadium on the seashore and a large synagogue. He even went so far as setting up sculptures of himself on a local high place bringing upon himself even more trouble with the local religious authorities.
