A city on the West shore of the Sea of Galilee near hot springs. It was built by Herod Antipas - Tetrarch of Galilee - about AD 18 and named in honor of the Emperor Tiberius. The city was built like a Hellenistic or Roman city with its streets crossing at right angles. Herod adorned it with many public buildings including a stadium on the seashore and a large synagogue. He even went so far as setting up sculptures of himself on a local high place bringing upon himself even more trouble with the local religious authorities. Herod also built the castle adjoining the city .....

Tiberias plays an important role in Jewish history. It was part of the land bequeathed to Naphtali (Joshua 19:35). The Sanhedrin (the High Court of Israel during the period of the Second Temple) relocated to Tiberias from Sepphoris. In the Mishnaic and Talmudic Period Tiberias was an important spiritual center .....
